Common Questions
A complete MRI RF shielding installation includes everything required to create a continuous RF-tight enclosure around the MRI suite so outside radiofrequency interference can’t degrade image quality. This typically includes RF shielding materials (copper or pre-fabricated panel systems), shielding seams and soldering, RF door installation and alignment, RF windows/observation glass, waveguides and penetration panels for MEP services (HVAC, electrical, medical gas, data), and proper grounding/bonding per project requirements. A full-scope install also includes field coordination with the GC and trades, sealing and finish-ready prep, and documentation for closeout.
Most MRI RF shielding installations take several days to a few weeks, depending on room size, shielding type (copper vs modular panels), site access, and how many penetrations and RF components are involved. Schedules are most commonly affected by framing readiness, late changes to MEP locations, door/window lead times, and coordination with other trades working in the same space. Retrofits and active hospital sites can also add time due to restricted work hours and infection control requirements. The fastest projects are the ones where penetrations, door frames, and equipment locations are confirmed early.
Shielding performance is verified through RF attenuation testing performed after installation and before final turnover. Testing confirms the room meets the required shielding effectiveness (often defined by the MRI manufacturer/OEM and project specs) and helps identify any leaks at seams, penetrations, doors, or windows. If issues are found, they’re typically corrected with targeted rework (additional bonding, soldering, gasketing, or sealing) and then re-tested. A professional installation team provides the test report and closeout documentation so the MRI room is inspection-ready and on track for OEM acceptance and commissioning.
